053008: Repost for Illustration Friday “Baby”

I am reposting this work because I think it is a great fit for the “Illustration Friday” theme of Baby. This is a portrait of my nephew when he was a few days old. He is a cutie!

Thursday update

Last night was another artomatic volunteer night and I did not get a chance to get into the studio. Today I went in and cut a mat for Hepburn, and it looks mighty nice, though I am going to get a nicer frame for it. I also started a new work – I am doing a graphic piece based on DNA (suggested by my new friend Michael Stebbins). I don’t have much on paper – but in my head it looks FABULOUS!!! Hopefully this weekend I will have something to show you.

I did have a nice surprise today. At last weeks Art Walk and Studio Open House a reporter and photographer from a local paper were there. The article came out today and the picture they used is of my work. I was also quoted several times. Even better the picture and article are on the front page of paper! Read the article online

I want to say thank you to the people who putting me on their favorite artomatic art lists and for all the great comments I have gotten in my book. I am really happy with the art and the artomatic display and it is nice to see my works are making other people happy as well. Though I have heard some other artists complaining about not getting on any of these lists – I want to say don’t let this change how you feel about your work. If you love your work, you just keep doing it. Just remember, not everything will frost everyone’s cookie – that’s why frosting comes in different flavors

mark your calendars: This Sunday June 1 is Artful Afternoon. My studio will be open (with me in it) and a slew of other activities. Help make a Greenbelt memory quilt with Artist in Residence Celestine Ranney-Howes, 1-3pm.  At 2pm, scholar Michael Dixon presents “Tales the Tombstones Whisper” — a tour of community and family history as found in Maryland graveyards. The Greenbelt Concert Band performs at 3pm.” More Info (pdf)

Bee is finally finished

{click for a larger image} 05/27/08. So the story behind this work is simple – we have quite a few bees which are always hovering by our shed. I have never been stung before because as soon as I see a bee (any kind) I run away. Sadly though, bees seem to be attracted to my red hair  – so they like too chase me. SO I figured this work would make the bees see they are my friends and then leave me alone.

A bit larger than 8″x 10 :: $450 framed original piece (archival framing). Email for availability and payment directions or for more information – like larger and more detailed images.

(details)

A funny story from when I was little. I was in elementary school. 1. The person who was supposed to take me home from school forgot me, and I had to walk home. 2. My mom was not home yet, and I did not have keys so I was stuck outside. 3. There was a bad thunderstorm brewing. 4. We had a wasps nest in one of light sconces – so when I sat on the front covered area they got angry and started to come after me. So my mom comes home from school to find her baby running around the house in the rain. This makes me laugh now – but I was not laughing then. [true story]

Bee Status + weekend at Artomatic

So I went in the studio to work on “bee” and sadly did not get as far as I hoped. The background is a lot of repetitive cutting – which goes fairly slow (plus makes my hand hurt). It is looking good though. I hope tomorrow or Wednesday to have it finished.

Also I worked on cutting signatures for the “Hula Girl” print series. I have one print in stock after mailing out the sold ones if anyone is interested. >>Email for more info and to purchase <<

I had two shifts this weekend at Artomatic. It was a lot of fun to be there, but a lot of work too. I was very tired after working and on Saturday spent the rest of the day chillin’. It was well deserved. I had a good set of volunteers on my Artomatic shifts – with a few exceptions. My shifts were only for 5 hours each, I can not imagine being a bar manager at Artomatic – you have to be there whenever it is open – they are there for up to 14 hours, I can not begin to think how tired I would be! If those that don’t know – Artomatic is all volunteer run and the people who put this together need a huge pat on their backs for doing such a kick ass job.

Bee Status and Art Walk

The art walk was quite successful. A lot of people stopped into talk and I even had an interview with the local paper. I had planned to work on “Bee” tonight and thought I would actually get is done. Though with all the people coming in I did not get as much as I had hoped. I have the background left to complete – though the background is quite a bit of cutting – so it will take a bit of time. I hope I have the time to work on it this weekend. Thank you for all the people who came in – it was a pleasure to talk to everyone!

Bee Status 05/20/08

So today I started on a new piece. It is not quite my typical style – more cute like. It is my take on a bee. I’ll tell the story behind this when it is finished, but this should let you know what I am up to. These wings are made of several layers to get the sheen and opacity just right.

I love the way the first eye turned out – just the way it looked in my mind. It is only about an 1.5 inch in actuality. This is made of three layers and a touch of embossing.

the art

All my artwork is made of paper. It is only created using paper, glue, and patience. The works on this site represent the pieces that I am attempting to create each weekday. These pieces are available to purchase and once an original is sold prints will become available. Other work can be viewed on my main site - www.sagworks.com. Larger works are available to purchase as originals or prints through sagworks.com. I am also available for commissioned pieces.
