022212 – Prepare for Takeoff is getting scanned

So dropped the piece off today to be scanned at Dodge-Chrome. I built a carrier for it with foam core board and it barely fit in my car. I did not think it would work, but once I removed the headrest from the passenger seat it gave me the extra few inches I needed. So a 32″ x 52″ thin object can fit into a mini if you were wondering.

It is weird I am feeling oddly emotional about the piece being away. I trust the work in the hands at the shop, but I guess I am so invested into this work that is being away is making my uncomfortable. I think it has to do that no one works with the pieces if unframed and that is what is making me uncomfortable.

I have my measurements in place and I can go ahead and do my frame order too – not keen about spending the $$, but its got to happen at some point in the next week.

022012 – Prepare for Takeoff

My assistant came in and helped me get everything adhered together. So the piece is done! Next step is to get it to the print shop to get it scanned. I also need to order the frame. Though I did decide the title is “Prepare for Takeoff”

Thought this was a funny picture to help illustrate scale. It is 47 3/4″ tall backed onto 50″ paper. I am 5’5″.

021812 – Stewardess (still)

So yesterday (the 18th) I got the film adhered to the back of the stewardess and did some patches on the background. Just waiting for my assistant to have some time to come and help me place her onto the background. Hoping tomorrow (Monday) he has an hour to spare. If she can be adhered down tomorrow then I should be able to take her to get scanned next week on a day that it is not raining on. I have the next pieces in the works – they are different.

Yes, I know I really need to think of a title for this….

Today I went and finished the planet surface and adhered it to the background. I also went and prepared the film pieces to get the stewardess attached – which is a 2-person job. I hope to be able to get this completed this weekend (keeping my fingers crossed that my assistance has some time for me)

021612 – Large stewardess Status

We are closer…. So after staring at my other photo and some discussions about the piece and finally a photoshop mockup I went ahead and made a change. So the elevator is gone now and I went ahead and reworked the planet’s surface. I like this much better and am happy with now where the piece is. So tomorrow I will finish up the surface and get that put all together and maybe this weekend I can work on assembly!!!!

021512 – Stewardess Status

I thought I had a solution to fill the void I see – a suitcase. This did not work, I started creating the suitcase and realized just exchanging one big blue square for a big grey one. So still not sure what is missing – but I least I know where it is missing from. Thinking of maybe adding a potted fern or something in that family. Any ideas?

021412 – Space bird

So I trimmed down the background for the space stewardess and worked on some positioning issues. I feel there is something missing. So I tried making more elevator tubes, but they did not work. Then I thought what about if there were things in the sky – so I made this tiny space bird (see he is wearing a space helmet). But that did not fix the issue – I like everything in the piece, but the ground. So I am trying to see if there is something I can add – need to decide fast so I can get this piece assembled. So in the meantime I started cutting down pieces of mounting film (which is what I am using to put everything together)

So I am not using the space bird – but I think he is cute. I kinda want to make a slew of little birds now – not sure what I’ll do with them though. Maybe I can seal them to something and make a super cool pendant or something….

021012 – Unloaded my paper

So today I went and unloaded all my paper and supplies I ordered. Man I ordered a lot! The 3 large sheets of paper I got for mounting were so big, they would not fit into my car – had to get some assistance to get them to the studio. Though I did try for a good 15 minutes to make them fit. The box they came in was so large it came up to my shoulders (OK I am only 5’5″). It is really nice paper – I think it is heavier than the entire background of the piece.

I also tested out the adhesive film I got to put all of this together. I won’t lie I am pretty scared about using this product and putting it all together. Though I got the product approved by a conservator and it is billed as an archival product – so I know I should not be so concerned. This is a big deal for me working at this scale.

So for the most part I finished the piece today.I am waiting on my large paper to mount it all. And some new adhesive tapes and films to put everything together with. Since there is a lot of surface area I do not want to use a wet media. Plus it will be a two-person job. After it is all assembled I will take it to get scanned and then I’ll be able to share a good image of the final piece.

So what do you think of it?

So finished up the background and get started on the ground and the last details. While working on the planet I had a logistic issue was not expecting. Though figured out a way to make it work. Tomorrow will work on creating the elevator for the right side of the piece. Then I think it will be ‘done’. I still don’t have my adhesives worked out just yet for adhering all the pig parts together. So it might not get its final assembly until late next week (when I am able to get my supplies). After it is all together, then I’ll be talking it to a print shop for a very expensive scan of the piece.
