While is wasn’t intentional I finished the zombie artwork just in time for Don the Beachcomber’s Birthday (which was yesterday 2/22). For those that don’t know he is a founding father of the tiki movement and he deserves to be celebrated. (more about Don the Beachcomber)
Don the Beachcomber’s zombie is the real thing. This recipe (as well as his others) were closely guarded and generally coded (mix by numbers) so others couldn’t get their hands on the recipe. Jeff “Beachbum” Berry (who if you don’t know is an amazing cocktail historian, author, speaker, drink maker, and general cool guy) has a great article on the history of figuring out the Zombie recipe – it is a quick fun read.
To honor him I hope everyone raises a glass to Don the Beachcomber this week – if you would like to try and make a zombie here is a recipe to get you started.
- ¾ ounce fresh lime juice
- ½ ounce fresh grapefruit juice
- ¼ ounce cinnamon syrup
- ½ ounce falernum
- 1½ ounces Puerto Rican gold rum
- 1½ ounces aged Jamaican rum
- 1 ounce Lemon Hart 151 Demerara Rum
- 1 teaspoon grenadine
- Dash Angostura bitters
- 6 drops Pernod or Herbsaint
Blend ingredients with 3/4 cup crushed ice – pur into your glass and add ice cubes and garnish with a Mint sprig. Don himself would not serve more than 2 of these to a customer – it is a strong one!
